Beginners Course

Beginners Course is the very first step towards understanding the theory and practice of yoga for newcomers. It starts with the introduction to the five points of yoga according to Swami Vishnudevananda, followed by explanations and demonstrations of yogic exercises (asanas), deep abdominal breathing teachniques (pranayama), proper relaxation, proper diet, positive thinking and meditation and the 12 basic postures and the surya namaskar (sun salutation).

The Beginners Course is an introduction to Yoga and the yogic lifestyle to all the people. Swami Vishnudevananda recommended daily practice of the 12 Basic Asanas. Traditionally, Yogis practice the Surya Namaskar (Sun salutation) before the Asanas. Get ready for the open classes and be able to start your own yoga practice.

The beginners course covers the following:

I) An introduction to the Five points of Yoga:

  1. Proper Exercise (Asanas) - Yoga poses help develop a strong, healthy body by enhancing flexibility and improving circulation.
  2. Proper Breathing (Pranayama) - Deep, conscious breathing reduces stress and many diseases.
  3. Proper Relaxation - Helps keep the body from going into overload mode, easing worry and fatigue.
  4. Proper Diet - Eating simple, healthy and vegetarian foods that are easy to digest notably have a positive effect on the mind and body, as well as the environment and other living beings.
  5. Positive Thinking (Vedanta) & Meditation (Dhyana) - These are the true keys to achieving peace of mind and eliminating negativity in our lives.

II) Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar)
The Sun Salutation is a graceful sequence of twelve positions performed as one continuous exercise. Each position counteracts the one before, stretching the body in a different way and alternately expanding and contracting the chest to regulate the breathing. Practiced daily it will bring great flexibility to your spine and joints and trim your waist. It limbers up the whole body in preparation for the Asanas.

III) 12 Basic Asanas (Yogic Postures): The Yogic physical exercises are called Asanas, a term which means steady pose. This is because the Yoga Asana (or posture) is meant to be held for some time. However this is quite an advanced practice. Initially, our concern is simply to increase body flexibility.
